THE BRIEF:
A creative hospitality furniture manufacturing company turned 10 years old and wanted to give away a grand prize that industry professionals would benefit from.
We were asked to come up with a competition where interior designers would be inspired. They needed to create a furniture design in order to stand a chance to win the grand prize.
OUR OBJECTIVES:
Due to the nature of the competition being about inspiring designers, we didn’t want to just create a once-off competition.
We wanted to create a creative platform that can be adapted yearly to inspire other designers and allow designers to spread and test their creativity in different ways each year.
THE OUTCOME
We started out with a brainstorming session where we outlined the inspiration behind the competition, the goals, how the competition will be structured and what marketing activities we would implement.
In this session, we also brainstormed ideas for the names of the creative platform as well as created a mood board for the overall design of the competition.
We coined the name ‘Design Compass’ and the slogan ‘Lead the path to the future of design’ which speaks to the aim of inspiring designers to create trendy designs as well as brings in features of the compass in Southern Hospitalities CI and branding.

We designed a poster, along with the following copy that was sent to a database of interior designers to encourage them to enter the competition.

We are celebrating 10 years of creating furniture for 4739 hotels, lodges and restaurants worldwide, helping clients design and develop 1780 custom pieces of furniture, delivering an average per year of 17 000 chairs, tables, sofas, beds and anything that you can sit on!! And if you do deal with us definitely 1237 smiles a year. Someone once said that 87% of statistics are made up on the spot but I don’t know if that’s true. What we do know is that anyone can make furniture, some can make it damn well and some know why they make it.
We make it to inspire optimism as we enjoy delivering our customer’s visions and watching them light up. It has been an honour spending the last 10 years in your service, everyone looking for their purposes and we are lucky enough to have ours.
This is why we are inviting you to lead the path to the future of design and help you find your purpose with our new, exciting competition, Design Compass 2023.
We know a myriad of talented designers are in our midst, which is why we are looking to celebrate their creativity. We are challenging you to design a bespoke piece of furniture that represents the future of interior design.
What do you need to submit and by when?
A sketch needs to be submitted and emailed to [email protected]. Your sketches can be drawn up anywhere, whether you design digitally, draw it up on the back of a serviette or till slip or in the beach sand, be creative! Scan your design and accompany it with reference images and mood boards to motivate your design idea if you would like. 5 entries are allowed per person. Please use Design Compass as your subject line for the submission.
The competition runs from 15 February to 28 February 2023. Winner will be announced on 3 March 2023.
What do you win?
You win a trip to Milan and tickets to the Salone Internazionale del Mobile exhibition. Flights and two-nights accommodation are included. Travel dates are from 18 April 2023 to 20 April 2023. Terms and conditions apply, please ask your sales agent.
